If I didn't "unlearn" these "teachings," there is no telling where I would be, but most importantly, I would likely be passing down these harmful "teachings" to my children, letting them influence my decisions and creating harm for others. The worst part was that many of these "teachings" were harmful to how I viewed myself, my culture, my race, and many other parts of my identity. I later learned that these "teachings" were incorrect and harmful. (Mine is.) It's still valuable to show visible disabilities (in a genuine way) to prevent the myth that there are no disabled folks out there. This is why I advise companies to not worry so much about showing people with disabilities in images. Unfortunately, I saw it used in a great article. It infantilizes deaf people like we always need help. My fellow deafies who prefer sign language and I would appreciate avoiding the use of photos with the help sign. Still, this looks a lot like the sign for "help." The thumb doesn't quite look like a thumbs up as it's slightly bent. The results showed a paid image signing help and this illustration of a person with the left hand open flat and the right fist resting on the left hand. In fact, I searched for sign language on Pixabay, a free stock photo image site. That's because 99% of the time, the person is signing "Help." (Make a thumbs up with one hand and put it in the flat palm of the other hand.) ![]() Nonetheless, I get frustrated when I see stock photos of someone signing. And besides, it's very hard to capture the beauty of sign language in a static photo. However, deafness is mostly a non-apparent disability.
